Arthritis is an extremely common – and extremely debilitating – degenerative condition. It causes swelling at joints, leading to significant stiffness and joint pain that only gets worse with time.
Arthritis can impact joints throughout the body, with some of the most common being weight-bearing joints of the knees, hips, ankles, and feet. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of cartilage, the lining at joints protecting against bone-on-bone friction. Rheumatoid arthritis is considered an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system erroneously targets and destroys your joints.
One in three Americans are believed to suffer from some type of arthritis or joint pain.
Everyone has experienced a headache at some point in their lives. But when the pain or other symptoms associated with your headache is severe or persistent, it’s time to get medical help.
Some of the most common types of headaches (and the symptoms for each) include:
- Migraines – throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light
- Tension Headaches – pain the gradually builds, and may affect both sides of the head, as well as the back of the head or neck
- Cluster Headaches – pain that occurs suddenly, and usually focused on one side only, behind the eye
Pain at the hips can be the result of many things, including trauma, muscle stiffness, and sprains or strains. Most often, hip pain is the result of arthritis, especially among older adults. If this is the case, the pain – caused by deterioration of the cartilage and bone at the pelvic joint – will only get worse with time.
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to see an interventional pain management physician to address your hip pain:
- Pain when walking or standing
- Difficulty putting on shoes or socks
- Swelling, tenderness at the hips
- Inability to move your leg or hip
Your joints are all the areas in your body where two bones meet. Muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue allow pain-free movement of your joints. Cartilage, a resilient rubber-like padding at the ends of bones, cushions the impact of bones rubbing against one another.
Joint pain could be the result of many things, including a pulled muscle, ligament or tendon tear, or a broken or dislocated bone. Most often, the cartilage has worn down due to trauma, arthritis – or both. Commonly used joints, such as at the wrists, hands, hips, and knees, are among the most common joints affected by arthritis.
If joint injuries are making it difficult to carry out the activities you enjoy, visit a physician who can diagnose the cause of your pain as well as recommend a pain management solution that’s right for you.
If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, or stiffness in one or both knees, it’s important to know that surgery is not your only option. Depending on the cause of your knee pain and the extent of your symptoms or condition, there are a variety of interventional pain management or minimally invasive therapies that can relieve your symptoms and let you get back to living your life, free of pain.
Common treatments for knee pain include viscosupplementation and corticosteroids.
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can pinch nerves in the area and cause a variety of pain or other symptoms, including numbness or tingling, weakness, and balance problems. When it occurs in the low back area of the spine, it is called lumbar spinal stenosis, or LSS, and it affects the nerves that travel into the legs.
One of the most common symptoms of LSS is pain or cramps in the legs when standing or walking – and symptoms are relieved by leaning forward or sitting down.
Ask your interventional pain management physician what type of treatment may be right for you. Minimally invasive therapies for LSS that we offer at Central Florida Spine & Pain include the Vertiflex and MILD® procedures
The sciatic nerve runs through your low back area, hips, buttocks, and down into each leg. When pressure is put on this nerve, it can result in a variety of symptoms, including pain, tingling, or weakness that travels down the back of a leg. Tellingly, usually just one side of the body is affected. The pain itself may range from mild to severe.
How to best address sciatica will depend on what is causing the sciatic nerve to be compressed.
